Halloween has long been a
favorite time of year for us as a family. Jochen and I find that we enjoy it more as parents than we ever did as kids. Okay, Jochen never actually celebrated Halloween as a child in Germany, but the Germans do have a similar holiday, called Fasching (known as Carnival in other parts of the world) where adults dress in costume, drink a little too much alcohol, and do crazy things just before the beginning of Lent.
This Halloween, Toby became a (very cute) fire-breathing dragon and Joshua a fierce Wolverine. For two boys who delight in pretending they are superheroes, wolves, or pirates for hours at a time, it was a rare opportunity to proudly share their costumes with the rest of the neighbhorhood.
Indeed, as a family we enjoyed it so much that we spent several days visiting after-Halloween sales at the Halloween superstores in town, where we bought more dress-up clothes for the kids and each of us selected a wacky hat for our family "crazy hat days" -- days when we have something to celebrate or just want to be silly.
